WTF!: Animals and Teeth

What you didn’t know about animals and teeth. Here are some Wtf! dental facts from the animal kingdom!

  • Sharks
Sharks are fascinating creatures, as beasts of the sea their teeth are an important weapon against prey. But what if they lose or damage teeth, this would have a devastating impact on their ability to survive. Amazingly sharks have evolved to compensate for damaged or tooth loss by actually being able to grow new teeth. In fact a shark could go through thousands of teeth in its lifetime and they are arranged in up to 15 rows
  • Snails
Snails may look harmless but did you know that they have teeth? What is more impressive is that they have thousands of teeth and just like sharks are able to grow new ones, creepy.
  • Dolphins
Dolphins have a permanent set of teeth, which interestingly have rings inside them. Just like trees these can be used to determine a dolphins age, but as they are permanent this is normally only possible after the dolphin has died 😦
  • Narwhals
These whales, in males, have a distinctive tusk which make them look like unicorns of the sea. In fact this tusk is actually an over grown canine tooth which can reach up to 10ft in length! Rarely both canines can develop as tusks!
  • Zebras
Zebras have large, strong teeth developed for grazing, interestingly their teeth never stop growing! This is why spending time grazing is important to help wear down the teeth!
