10 Secrets: Causing bad breath

6. Decay – Some of the germs in our mouth love sugar. When we eat chocolates, biscuits, sweets, cakes, fizzy drinks these bacteria consume the sugar and release acid. The acid dissolves holes into the teeth – this is called decay. These holes can get filled with food and other debris from the mouth. If the holes are deep – this debris cannot be easily cleaned out and so festers in the tooth. As the tooth and food rots it can release a smell which contributes to bad breath. Removal of the decay and filling of the cavities and solve this, in some cases the tooth must be removed.

7. Infection – The mouth is in close contact with the outside world, which means it is exposed to lots of germs whether it be bacteria or viruses. Infections occur when the immune system fails to protect the body. The germs take a foothold, multiply and spread. A bad smell can come from the germs but also from the necrotic (dying) tissue that can result in untreated tissue. Any infection should be treated by a doctor or dentist.

8. Fasting – There is a significant reduction in saliva production during fasting. This is because food stimulates saliva release. Less saliva means the mouth is more dry, this results in an increase bacteria that can given bad breath. Some diets also are associated with halitosis, e.g. the keto diet. Dietary adjustments can rectify this.

9. Menstrual Cycle – In 2008, a group of scientists in Brazil performed research which suggested that saliva flow was lower during the menstrual and also premenstrual phases. It is suggested that the drying of the mouth resulted in increase in VSC’s (volatile sulphur compounds) which gives rise to halitosis.

10. Medications – The mouth can be very sensitive to certain medications. One common side effect can result in a decrease in saliva flow – also known as xerostomia. For some people this drying of the mouth may increase bacterial levels in the mouth which in turn can result in bad breath. Speak to your doctor to see if your medications have these side effects.
