The Vertucci classification is a system of classifying the root canal morphology of human permanent teeth.
Forumlated by Vertucci et al. in 1984. There are eight types which describe the shape and number of root canals from the pulp chamber to the root apex
Type I – a single main canal (1)
Type II – 2 canals from the pulp chamber joining to a single canal at the apex(2-1)
Type III – a single canal leaves the pulp chamber, divides in 2 and then rejoins as a single canal approaching the apex (1-2-1)
Type IV – 2 separate canals(2)
Type V – a single canal leaves the pulp chamber dividing into 2 separate canals with their own apical foramina (1-2)
Type VI – 2 separate canals merge in the body of the root and then divide back to 2 with their own apical foramina(2-1-2)
Type VII – a single canal which divides then rejoins in the body of the root and then divides into 2 separate canals with their own foramina(1-2-1-2)
Type VIII – 3 separate canals(3)
